Program Description

This site seeks young adults to serve and learn with the people of Chicago, to engage in intentional Christian community and personal discipleship, to work with local ministries and agencies and to explore urban, multicultural ministry as a vocation and calling.

Placement Opportunities

Potential sites include service in the areas of:

  • Elder care
  • Homeless services
  • Sustainable food sources & community gardens
  • Education
  • Advocacy
  • Community development
  • Congregational ministry
  • After school programs
  • Refugee assistance

Volunteers will serve their work placements approximately 32 hours a week.

Housing

Each volunteer will live in community with three to five other volunteers for the year. The house is located on Chicago’s west side.

Intentional Community Aspects

There will be three retreats each year for the participants that will be led by the site coordinator. Households will have rules such as no alcohol or smoking in the house. Dress is expected to be appropriate for the community in which the volunteers serve. This is fairly conservative (usually no sleeveless tops or exposed waistlines). The community of volunteers will create their own covenant, which will govern such things as house rules and spiritual accountability as well as setting goals and aims of their year together. Community covenants are living documents and are reviewed regularly. In addition to serving in a social service agency, the volunteers will be part of a local church and active community members in their neighborhood.

Requirements

Age: 20-29
Education: college desirable
Other: applicants should be considering a career in urban ministry.
