Situation Report

Central America – Tropical Storm Agatha
June 1, 2010

PDA has received information from Carlos Cardenas, mission co-worker and PDA representative in Central America and the Caribbean, about the impact of Tropical Storm Agatha in Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The first named storm of the 2010 season, Agatha struck Guatemala on Saturday, May 29, with winds up to 45mph, dumping three feet of rain and causing destructive mudslides.

At this time, partners are reporting approximately 160 deaths and more than 90,000 evacuees in temporary shelters. There is considerable damage to infrastructure in Guatemala and El Salvador, including roads, bridges, public buildings including schools, houses, sewage systems, crops and small husbandry.

PDA is ready to respond with One Great Hour of Sharing and/or designated funds to assist with disaster recovery needs. Already as part of the emergency response, members of the ACT Alliance in Guatemala are supporting first responders on the ground.

How to help

You can stand in the gap for disaster survivors and help the church in this response.

GIVE. The generous sharing of your financial blessings through the One Great Hour of Sharing offering and special designated giving provides the resources needed to assist with immediate emergency needs, clean up provisions and long-term and unmet needs.

Individuals may give through their local Presbyterian congregation, on the secure PC(USA) Web site, or by sending their check to:

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
P.O. Box 643700

ACT. Stay informed and share information about the need with others. Sign up to receive PDA Rapid Information Network email notices to alert you of additional needs. Return to the PDA Web site for information as assessments become clear and the response continues.

PRAY. Please lift up in prayer all who have been affected by this disaster, including those who have lost homes, families, or stability, and for those who work tirelessly to offer assistance.
