The Presbytery of Charlotte

North Carolina

Honoring the past and looking to the future, more than 400 commissioners and guests on February 14, 2009, celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Presbytery of Charlotte. Held at Johnson C. Smith University, founded in 1867 under the auspices of the Committee on Freedmen of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., the gathering also celebrated the presbytery’s 100th Stated Meeting.

Created January 1, 1989, the Constituting Meeting of the Presbytery of Charlotte was held at Davidson College Presbyterian Church nine days later. Combined membership of the new presbytery included four predecessor presbyteries: Catawba (organized October 6, 1866, and the largest concentration of traditionally African American churches in the denomination), Concord (established December 24, 1795), Fayetteville (organized in 1813), and Mecklenburg (organized in 1824 and reconstituted in 1869).

In honoring the presbytery’s past twenty years of service, many presbytery- and denomination-wide events that the Presbytery of Charlotte has hosted were recognized. Specially designed stoles were presented to former and present presbytery executives and to the present Synod of the Mid-Atlantic executive, David McKee. Medallions presented to former presbytery moderators and Communion ware for the worship service during the meeting were designed at a North Carolina pottery.

United as brothers and sisters in the ministry and mission of “Growing Christ’s Church Deep and Wide,” the Presbytery of Charlotte truly has committed to joining God’s Spirit and to continue to grow in evangelism, servanthood, discipleship, and diversity. Through international ministry partnerships, Community Disaster Response Teams, Hunger Programs, Latino Ministries, Leadership Development Programs, the nurturing of inquirers and candidates for ministry of Word and Sacrament, and the Church Development Committee, the Presbytery of Charlotte joyfully celebrates its past and looks toward a future of service in the life that springs forth from trusting in Christ.

The presbytery has 134 churches with 39,923 members. Union Presbyterian Seminary is located on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte.
