World AIDS Day

Get involveD

World AIDS Day, December 1, is the one day of the year when individuals, churches and organizations from around world come together across the globe to commemorate people who lost their lives to AIDS, stand in solidarity with people living with AIDS and celebrate the progress made in responding to the pandemic.  It is also an opportunity to recommit to ending the pandemic.

Gettıng to Zero

This World AIDS Day theme is “Getting to Zero.”  It was selected by the World AIDS Campaign and backed by the United Nations.  The “Getting to Zero” campaign, which will be used until 2015, focuses on the goals of zero new infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths.

Access to HIV treatment in low- and middle-income countries increased ten-fold over a span of just five years, yet only one-third of people in need of treatment for HIV are receiving it and new infections continue to outpace the number of new people beginning treatment. (In spite of the many advances, there is still much work for each of us to do to get to Zero).

Support the Peacemaking Offering

In 2007 the 217th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) expanded the Peacemaking Offering causes to include the fight against HIV and AIDS. This action encourages congregations and presbyteries to use their 25 percent of the Peacemaking Offering toward addressing HIV and AIDS issues nationally and globally.  A new HIV and AIDS and Peacemaking Offering Extra Commitment Opportunity, #E053504, has been created to support the PC(USA) as it works with partner churches to address both the causes and impact of HIV and AIDS by empowering women, reducing poverty through income-generating activities and providing orphan care and support, home-based care and AIDS education in seminaries.

When you look at who and how many people are dying of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, you can see why AIDS is a peacemaking issue. The generation that works, provides for its families and sustains community life is dying. More than 14 million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS since the epidemic’s beginning. Who will keep families, communities and nations going?

See 'The Changing Face of HIV/AIDS'

A DVD by the Presbyterian AIDS Network (PAN)

AIDS ribbonIn the United States, the face of HIV and AIDS has changed dramatically in the 30 years since the start of the pandemic.  Communities are living with increased rates of infection and more and more Americans are affected by HIV.

This DVD in six 3- minute segments explores “The Changing Face of HIV/AIDS,” telling the story of ministries of compassion and support as the church and our communities respond. The segment, “What People of Faith Need to Know about HIV/AIDS” offers a basic primer for the church living in an HIV Positive world.  By discussing the facts about HIV and AIDS, the video empowers the viewer to make faithful decisions and the church to take faithful actions, as well as helping to reduce the stigma attached to this devastating illness.

The Presbyterian AIDS Network (PAN), a Network of the Presbyterian Health, Education & Welfare Association (PHEWA), is available to assist a congregation in becoming an HIV and AIDS Competent Church.

A memorial to Jack Deckard, this DVD was made possible through the generosity of the Jack Deckard Memorial Advised Fund, Presbyterian Foundation.
